Marlene Salas-Provance

Dr. Salas-Provance was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She grew up in Albuquerque's South Valley and attended St Ann's Catholic School. After graduating from Rio Grande High School, she received B. A. and M. A. degrees in speech-language pathology from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, and her Ph.D. in speech science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also has a Masters in Healthcare Administration from the University of Missouri, School of Medicine, in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. Marlene Salas-Provance has been a speech-language clinician since 1975 and a college professor since 1990. She has taught at Fontbonne College, St. Louis University Health Sciences Center, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, the University of the Pacific, served as chair of the department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Montevallo, and is currently director of the Communication Disorders Program at New Mexico State University. She conducted research at Central Institute for the Deaf, Washington University and directed Carmichael Speech Pathology in Sacramento, California and the Biloxi Speech and Hearing Clinic in Mississippi. Dr. Marlene Salas-Provance's many publications include an article on the healthcare needs of Hispanic families in New Mexico.
In 2009, she recieved the Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). She was named a Fellow of ASHA in 2008, an honor she retains for life. Other ASHA appointments include being a member of the Multicultural Issues Board, member of the Financial Planning Board, president of the Hispanic Caucus, and coordinator of the Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Special Interest Division. Dr. Salas-Provance served as president of the Missouri Speech-Language and Hearing Association and helped develop the first Ethnic Studies minor at the University of the Pacific. She has traveled to Peru, the Philippines, El Salvador and Venezuela with medical teams that treat children with cleft lip and palate. She was named one of the 40 Top Professional Hispanic Women in New Mexico in 2006, and is included in Mujeres Valerosas, a published work of the Hispanic Women's Council of Albuquerque.
